Globe Institute of Technology proudly presents the second annual Urban Funk, a two week celebration of urban youth culture. From September 18 through 29, 2006, we offer a series of events focusing on issues essential to New York City youth. Each event is a forum for expression, self-discovery, discussion, and community building. All events are free and open to the community.

2006 Calendar of Events
9-18-06: Art Gallery Exhibition Opening Reception (5-7pm)
To kick off the start of our two week celebration, we introduce the urban youth experience through art. Our Art Gallery Exhibition will display work by young artists from around the city sharing their unique perspectives. Join us for the exhibition’s opening reception.
Location: Globe Institute of Technology’s Gallery
Ongoing exhibition: 9/18/06 – 10/18/06 Gallery hours: 10am to 5pm daily
9-19-06: Hip Hop Workshop (6-8pm)
This workshop presents original contributors to hip-hop history. Join us as hosts such as Ken Swift and Phase 2 provide real perspectives on the evolution of urban sounds, culture, and identities.

9-20-06: Panel Discussion: Immigration: Voices from the Future (6-7:30pm)
Educators, immigration advocates, and immigrants discuss immigration’s influence on the city. New York City youth will discuss how changing immigration patterns impact neighborhood housing, human services, education, and our future. Focus will be given to the importance of social action and youth community involvement.

9-23-06: Lose Control with Urban Funk featuring the Lose Control Comedy Troupe (7-10pm)
What happens when you get twelve people up on stage? They Lose Control! Check out the best in improv and sketch comedy. This event is recommended for people 18 years or older (Mature Language).

9-26-06: Health and Wellness Fair (12-3pm)
The fair addresses important questions about challenges facing urban youth today. From skyrocketing HIV rates to obesity and asthma, join health advocates as they provide real solutions and ideas for improving the health and habits of New York City’s future – its youth.

9-27-06: Youth Film Expo (4-8pm)
Our film expo is an opportunity to view films by urban youth for urban youth. This screening of short films is sponsored by Heights Entertainment.

9-28-06: Panel Discussion: Sports in the City: Health, Development, and Change (6-7:30pm)
Community leaders, policy analysts, and advocates lead discussions on sports and activity opportunities provided to urban youth. As New York City changes, youth question where the green spaces, ball fields, and public facilities are.

9-29-06: Urban Showcase and After-Party (7-10pm)
To conclude our two week celebration, the Lower East Side’s Hamilton-Madison House will host a night for dancers, DJs, MCs, comedians, poets, and more to get up on stage and show off that talent! This is an exciting opportunity for youth talent to provide new perspectives and insight into tomorrow’s expressive arts. We will end the night with a DJed after-party, one last opportunity to come together and continue the spirit of Urban Funk.
